Course Description


According to the National Center for Children Living in Poverty, the single greatest threat to a child’s well-being is poverty. As a Volunteer Child Advocate, understanding the nature of poverty and its effects on children and families will assist you with being a more effective advocate. This course will guide you through key facts about children and their families living in poverty. It will also provide you with tips on how to address the impacts of poverty on their lives.


You are not expected to complete the course in one sitting.  It is recommend you complete one chapter at a time, allowing at least 30 minutes per chapter.  

NOTE:  For GAL Staff and Volunteers, the Optima training topic for this 1.5 hour course is "Dynamics of Child Abuse & Neglect".
