Course Description

An Overview of Exceptional Student Education (Special Education) 

During this first of the 2019-2010 school year Educational Advocacy webinars, Dr. Katie Kelly, M.ED., PH.D., ESQ., with Community Legal Services of Mid-Florida, provides an overview for understanding Exceptional Student Education (formerly known as "Special Education") and why this is necessary for children who have experienced trauma. 


The following is discussed:  

  • The connect between the Dependency system and the school system: the effects of abuse
  • Exceptional Student Education (Special Education) road map 
  • DEA: the federal statute protecting students with disabilities 
  • The IEP: IDEA’s contract between the District and the student; and 
  • Advocacy tips

The information shared by Dr. Kelly will either answer the questions you have or it will lead you to a previous webinar that will. It is highly recommended that you take advantage of Dr. Kelly’s expertise and access all of her recorded webinars found in I am for the child Academy. The webinars are designed to build upon each other and provide you with a clear understanding of your role as an educational advocate.
