Course Description

This presentation will focus on assessing the need for child testimony, the suitability of the child witness, and entering statements of children.  Participants will learn basic linguistics and child development as well as how to avoid trauma triggers to provide a child centered approach in court and depositions. The presentation will highlight children’s language development including syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. Participants will learn the fundamentals of questioning children in a developmentally appropriate manner and provide strategies to elicit recall of past events.

Alicia Guerra, Carol Mitchell, Sandra McLaughlin, Florida Guardian ad Litem Program,

Alicia L. Guerra is Board Certified in Juvenile Law and has 18 years of experience in dependency litigation. She completed joint degree programs at the Florida State University in 2001 being awarded a Masters of Social Work with a certificate in Child Welfare and a Juris Doctor. She has been an attorney with the Guardian ad Litem Program in various positions since 2004. She is currently serving as Supervising Attorney in for the Guardian ad Litem Program in the 20th Judicial Circuit.Carol Mitchell is a Child's Best Interest Senior Attorney with the Guardian ad Litem Program and has advocated for over 450 children. Ms. Mitchell is the 2019 recipient of the Judge Daniel P. Dawson Award for the Central Region, recognized for significant leadership in advocacy on behalf of Florida's abused and neglected children.Sandra McLaughlin is a Child's Best Interest Senior Attorney with the Guardian ad Litem Program. Ms. McLaughlin has 18 years of experience in dependency. Ms. McLaughlin started her career as a Child Protective Investigator and Supervisor with the Department of Children and Families and has conducted over 3000 investigations. Ms. McLaughlin is also a trained Forensic Interviewer with over 500 forensic interviews of child victims and witnesses.
