Overview of the Child Protection Team
Dr. Cameron Rosenthal, medical director of the University of Florida Child Protection Team, presented an overview of CPT's role in Florida's child welfare system. She explained how CPT provides medical expertise to DCF and law enforcement, conducts forensic interviews, and offers services for children suspected of abuse or neglect. Dr. Rosenthal discussed various types of child maltreatment, including neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse, and shared examples of cases she has encountered. She also covered the forensic interview process, emphasizing the importance of a child-friendly environment and trained interviewers. The presentation included information on how CPT assesses and documents abuse, as well as challenges in recognizing and reporting abuse. Attendees asked questions about CPT's involvement with Native American communities, assessing caregiver appropriateness, and the role of Guardians Ad Litem in collaborating with CPT.
