Course Description

This course discusses the importance of information gathering, documentation and report writing.

As a Guardian ad Litem, your advocacy can only be effective when you know what to recommend for the children you will represent.  We cannot advocate in a vacuum.  This course delves into where and how to obtain records and information as well as the significance of documentation.

As a child advocate, it is crucial that we are able to articulate our children’s and their family’s needs as well as our fact based recommendations.  In this chapter, we take a look at the power of a well-written and researched judicial review report.

By the conclusion of this chapter you should be able to:
•Know where and how to obtain records and information necessary for advocating for your child.
•Know the significance of monthly home visits with your child and how to document what occurred.
•Describe how to prepare for meetings about the child and family.
•Explain the importance of documenting and observing parent/child visitation.
•Understand the necessity of a judicial review report.

You are not expected to complete the course in one sitting.  It is recommend you complete one chapter at a time, allowing at least 30 minutes per chapter.

NOTE:  For Guardian ad Litem staff and volunteers, the Optima training topic for this 1.5 hour course is "Best Interest Representation".
